tantalizing turmeric

Turmeric continues to excite my tastebuds and heal my body, especially adding fresh turmeric  to juices and smoothies.  I have not only been using it to season kale chowders and black rice but have also been playing around with adding it to fresh juices and smoothies. I decided to dive into the healing power of turmeric with 3 of my favorite deliciously satisfying, hydrating recipes.


Turmeric is an ancient root native to Indonesia and Southern India.  Curcumin, the active ingredient is turmeric has been known to be antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory, loaded with many nutrients such as niacin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, sodium, potassium, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium and z, also detoxifies the liver, improves digestion, boosts immunity... only to name a few. * 1 cup almond mylk (homemade is best)

* 1 tsp. turmeric powder

* 1 tsp. raw honey (use local honey for added health benefits)


***mix turmeric and honey in a mug until evenly blended to a thick paste.

    warm almond mylk on stovetop and pour into mug with paste. mix well.

    enjoy!  (adjust recipe to taste and quantity)



'turmeric ginger bliss'

*16oz. almond mylk                             * 2 frozen bananas

* 4 peeled oranges                              * 2-4 thumbs fresh turmeric root peeled

* 4 thumbs fresh ginger root peeled    * 1 Tbs. raw coconut oil 



* juice 4 oranges with turmeric and ginger root (I used all 4 thumbs of turmeric/ginger)    (makes approx. 16oz. )

* combine juice with 16 oz. almond mylk, banana and coconut oil

* blend until smooth.  makes approx. 40 oz. YUM!



'turmeric splash':

*16oz. coconut water                * 1 small thumb peeled turmeric root

*juice of 1/2 lime                      * 1 thumb peeled ginger root


*push turmeric root, ginger root and lime through juicer (very little will come out so poor a small amount of coconut water into running blender to flush the remaining turmeric and lime out...add remaining coconut water to glass.  makes approx. 16oz. 




*1 large grapefruit                      *2 valencia oranges

*1 blood orange                          *1 small thumb peeled ginger root

*1 small thumb peeled turmeric


*push all ingredients through juicer.  makes approx.  16oz.  




***In some cases turmeric can cause an allergic reaction.  I know that my daughter

    notices her tongue and mouth tingles after she consumes it.  If you are not

    familiar with turmeric please try it in very tiny doses and pay attention to any

    redness, tingling or itching. 


 ***turmeric is rich in yellow color and

      can stain anything it comes in contact

      with. Be sure to immediately wipe

      counter tops and wash plastic

      containers...using glass or stainless

      steel is best.
